Festivals

MSVMA District 9 Choral Festival was once again hosted by Standish-Sterling Central High School on February 27 & 28, 2014.   Twenty-seven choirs from all over north east Michigan performed at this two day festival.
Choirs are judged on Tone, Pitch, Rhythm, Diction, Interpretation and Presentation on a scale of 1 - 5 (with 5 being the best) by highly qualified adjudicators in the performance room and sight reading room.
The Beaverton Middle School Choir performed Child of Tomorrow by Patterson and Child of the Universe by Cassils (MS Primary Unison) and the Beaverton High School Choir performed River, Sing Your Song by Butler and Come Live With Me and Be My Love by Gilpin (HS Primary SAB).
Both groups achieved their "goal" of not receiving anything lower than a 3 in any given category.  Both groups received an "Excellent" Rating ~ Qualifying for STATE.
I would like to thank  Mark Lundgren of Standish for hosting/running this event and Emerick Dee of Roscommon for helping schedule all the groups.
We would also like to THANK Mrs. April Dice for accompanying both groups again this year and look forward to working with her for our spring concert on May 28th.

MSBOA District IX Band and Orchestra Festival 2014:  Member schools had the choice of signing up to perform in February @ Oscoda HS or in March @ Roscommon HS.    Weather was certainly a concern and prevented us from performing in Oscoda.  Luckily, Beaverton was rescheduled to perform at Roscommon HS on March 8th.
Instrumental groups are assessed by highly qualified adjudicators on Tone, Intonation, Rhythm, Technique and Interpretation in the performance room and sight reading room.   A Division I represents an excellent level performance and musicianship.  A Division II represents a Good level of performance and musicianship, but not worthy of the highest rating because of minor defects.  A Division III represents a Fair level of performance and musicianship, but not outstanding.  Shows accomplishment and promise, but is lacking in some essential qualities.  A Division IV represents a Poor level of performance and musicianship which is lacking in many essential qualities.  A Division V represents an unsatisfactory performance.
The Beaverton 8th Grade Band performed March Royale by Williams, On the Colorado Trail by LaPlante and Celtic Air and Dance No 2 by Sweeney.   The Beaverton High School Band performed Normandy Beach March by Edmondson, Nathan Hale Trilogy by Curnow and Down By the Salley Gardens by Sweeney.
Both groups set a goal of receiving nothing lower than a B in any given category.    The 8th Grade Band exceeded this goal and received an over-all  Division I Rating - just qualifying for state.  The HS Band received an over-all Division II Rating - just missing the mark to qualify for state (by one letter in one category).
We would like to THANK Karen Lopez of Oscoda (for hosting and chairing this event), Seth Kilbourn of Roscommon (for hosting) and the parents who traveled via school bus and helped chaperon this trip.
We would also like to send a big THANK YOU out to  Warren and Diane White for donating a pizza luncheon for the Beaverton musicians.  Your kindness and generosity is greatly appreciated and certainly does not go unnoticed.

Homecoming 2013

10/8/2013

What does Homecoming mean to you? For some, it's float-building, pep assemblies, spirit days, parades, and dances. For others, it's about coming home, visiting with childhood friends, family dinners, and looking at the past. Homecoming 2013 was very special this year. School spirit has grown over the past few years and our student body has become one.
The music department provided entertainment for the pep assembly, parade, and the football game. At the pep assembly, the HS Choir dedicated their a-capella selection, "I'll Be There," to those struggling with life's great challenges. Our music booster parents furnished a potluck dinner after school, prior to the parade. We can't thank those parents enough. The food was awesome!
Friday evening, several alumni members returned to preform pregame with the HS Band. What memories that brought back! It was great to see all "my kids", (whatever age they may be...). We hope to build on this legacy and invite members to return next year and many years to come.

The school year is off to a great start! Marching band is well underway, with Tuesday night rehearsals. Our fall performance schedule can be found under the forms section of the Band. This year's show is James Bond, and the three selections are:
  • Goldfinger / James Bond Theme
  • Live and Let Die
  • For Your Eyes Only / James Bond Theme
All of the above pieces of music are arranged by Mike Story.
